I am overjoyed to extend a heartfelt welcome to you and your child at Fia Mia Academy! I'm Heather Wakeford, and the privilege of being the Executive Director of Fia Mia Academy fills me with immense pride and excitement. With a passion for education spanning fifteen years, I graduated with honors from Elmhurst College, holding a B.A. Degree in Elementary Education and an A.A. Degree from the College of DuPage. Presently, I maintain a Professional Educator License, Director Certification, and an Early Childhood Educator Credential. I am an active member of the North American Reggio Emilia Alliance and have been recognized as a former Golden Apple Award Nominee.

My journey in education has shown me the tremendous impact of quality education on a child's life. It's not just about imparting knowledge; it's about nurturing their curiosity, empowering their dreams, and instilling a lifelong love for learning. The Reggio Emilia approach holds a special place in my heart. It resonates with my belief that children are innately creative and capable learners. They possess an incredible thirst for understanding the world around them. As educators, it's our responsibility to cultivate and celebrate this innate curiosity, fostering an environment where every child's unique talent can thrive.

On a personal note, I am a lifelong resident of Elmhurst, cherishing life with my husband, Bill, and our children, Austin, Tyler, and Travis. We share our home with our lovable dog, Falcor, and my parents, forming a lively and loving family. In my leisure time, I enjoy quality time with my family, boating, and fishing at our summer home, love to travel, find solace in reading, and am an avid storm chaser!

As a mother myself, I understand the importance of providing a nurturing, stimulating, and safe environment where our youngest learners can flourish and discover their true potential. We're dedicated to creating an atmosphere where learning is an exciting adventure, and where every day is a new opportunity for growth and discovery. The Reggio philosophy is not just a set of principles for us; it's a guiding light in shaping an educational journey that's deeply personal and enriching for each child. Your trust in us to lay the educational foundation for your child is an honor that we cherish.

We're here to partner with you, listen to your thoughts, address your concerns, and collaborate in crafting a unique educational experience tailored to your child's needs and aspirations. Ms. Meghan Dempsey

Ms. Meghan Dempsey

Assistant Director | B.A. in Early Childhood and Support Services

Hello! I’m Meghan Dempsey, and I’m so excited to join the Fia Mia Academy team as Assistant Director. With over 15 years in the early childhood field, I’m passionate about creating a warm, safe, and joyful space where children can thrive through play, exploration, and discovery. I can’t wait to get to know all of our wonderful families and build strong connections that support your child’s growth every step of the way!

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood and Support Services from Saint Joseph’s College and hold a Director Endorsement from National Louis University. I became an educator because I’ve always been drawn to the idea of making a lasting impact on children’s lives. Early education lays the foundation for everything that follows, and I feel incredibly lucky to be part of that journey. I’m especially passionate about helping children build confidence, develop their social-emotional skills, and discover their unique strengths.

At the heart of my approach are kindness, curiosity, and connection. I believe children learn best when they feel safe, supported, and encouraged to explore at their own pace. I strive to create a nurturing environment where learning is hands-on, joyful, and rooted in strong relationships. Every child is unique, and I believe in celebrating their individuality while helping them build the confidence and skills they need to thrive.

On the personal side, becoming a mom five years ago to four amazing kids has been one of the greatest joys of my life. When I’m not at Fia Mia Academy, you’ll probably find me curled up with a good book, trying out a new baking recipe, or treasure hunting in a thrift store.

Mrs. Caitlin Bouse

Mrs. Caitlin Bouse

Early Childhood Teacher | M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education

I've been working in the field of Early Childhood Education for over 20 years. I hold an M.Ed. (2009) in early childhood education with a specialization in special education from Roosevelt University.

In my quest to create a space full of nurturing play, child-led learning, nature, and relationships, I discovered that play-based learning is a MUST for all early childhood environments. I'm an advocate for playful learning in early childhood and support the development of problem-solving skills, creativity, and social interactions by acknowledging and building upon the child's preferred ways of exploring and understanding their environment. I firmly believe that the classroom is the third teacher.

I recognize that children live in a three-dimensional world and need to be learning from interactions with real-world objects and people. Children learn by doing and experiencing, not by passively watching. By closely observing and building respectful relationships with the children in my care, I carefully curate my classroom experiences and provocations to be meaningful and relevant to the children and their specific developmental needs.

I'm not just a teacher and lifelong learner... I also have an awesome daughter, and I love tacos, hiking, biking, reading everything, and traveling to new places.

Mrs. Kyleen Flynn

Mrs. Kyleen Flynn

Early Childhood Teacher | B.A. in Art Education

I am an early childhood educator with 22 years of experience, 17 of which have been dedicated to working with young children. My degree is in Art Education, preschool through grade 12. Although I have experience teaching all levels, early childhood is where I found my home. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, I believe that every child is a capable and competent learner, full of unique potential and creativity. I view teaching as a collaborative process where both children and educators learn from one another.

I am particularly passionate about integrating nature education and art into the classroom. I believe that connecting children with the natural world fosters curiosity, responsibility, and a deeper understanding of the environment. Through hands-on experiences, such as outdoor exploration and nature-inspired activities, children develop a sense of wonder and appreciation for the world around them.

Art education is also a cornerstone of my teaching philosophy. I encourage children to express themselves through various artistic media, helping them develop creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. I view art as a powerful tool for self-expression and a way for children to process and communicate their thoughts and emotions.

At the heart of this philosophy lies a deep respect for the development of social and emotional skills. I prioritize creating a warm, inclusive space where children feel seen, heard, and valued. I guide children in building empathy, resilience, and self-regulation by supporting their natural inclination to connect with others. Through collaborative projects, open dialogue, and reflection, children learn not just how to express themselves, but how to listen, understand, and navigate the complexities of emotions and relationships.

As a lifelong learner, I am continuously inspired by the children I teach, as they remind me of the joy and curiosity that comes with discovering new things. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my family, creating my own artwork, and surrounding myself with nature. These personal interests help me stay grounded and inspired as I continue to grow both personally and professionally.

Ms. Bridget Zito

Ms. Bridget Zito

Early Childhood Associate Teacher | B.A. in Fine Arts

I believe that emanating positive energy in a warm and nurturing environment is the greatest gift one can give a developing mind. When a student feels welcome, safe, and respected and their efforts are appreciated and praised, a lifetime love of learning is established. My role as an Early Childhood Teacher is to provide the support and guidance that is so crucial during the formative years. I am committed to the social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth of each student.

By working collaboratively with other teachers, the students observe a sense of community and follow the examples set by their mentors. I love having the ability to share my creative background in fine arts, visual and performing, with all involved in the classroom. I also love the opportunity to learn new concepts in STEM, and the strengths of my peers, daily. The positive relationships between the teachers and the students are fostered by being a part of the bigger picture while having the ability to stand out and share their own individual ideas and talents.

Each child is a unique person and possesses their own learning styles, strengths and talents. As a teacher, I am there to observe what makes each student special and understand their specific needs in the learning process. Students are most excited to learn when they are able to make choices, share their ideas, and have the necessary tools to build upon their knowledge. I strive to know each child individually and help them discover and build upon their strengths.

"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up."

— Pablo Picasso

Ms. Heather Jakubosky

Ms. Heather Jakubosky

Early Childhood Teacher | B.A. in Applied Science with a minor in Early Childhood Education

Hello! I’m Heather Jakubosky, and I’m absolutely thrilled to be a part of the Fia Mia Academy community! With a bachelor’s degree in applied science and a minor in Early Childhood Education, I’ve spent over 20 years working with young children, from infants to Kindergarteners.

I’m a firm believer in the power of hands-on learning—it allows children to explore, experiment, and truly engage with the world around them. By emphasizing a Reggio-inspired approach, I create an environment where students can learn early lessons and skills by actively engaging with materials and learning through experience. This method, which values the child’s natural curiosity and creativity, helps them build confidence, develop critical thinking skills, and deepen their understanding in a way that’s meaningful to them. Through exploration and collaboration, I aim to foster imagination, holistic growth, and a lifelong love of learning.

When I’m not in the classroom, I love spending time with my nieces and taking long walks with my new rescue dog, Amber. I’m so excited to bring my passion for hands-on learning to Fia Mia Academy and to help our little explorers discover and grow every day. Here’s to the start of a wonderful journey together!

Ms. Karen Guzman

Ms. Karen Guzman

Early Childhood Teacher | A.A. in Early Childhood Education

Hi, I’m Karen, an early childhood educator with an associate’s degree in early childhood education. Since 2015, I’ve had the privilege of working with infants, creating a safe, fun, and nurturing environment where they can thrive. My goal is to help children develop a positive outlook on education and a genuine love of learning from the very start.

I believe deeply in the power of play. Guided by play theory, I see play as a vital part of early development, not only for language growth but also for how children begin to understand the world around them. As Albert Einstein once said, “Play is the highest form of research,” and I incorporate that belief into everything I do in the classroom.

When I’m not teaching, I enjoy staying active and spending time outdoors. Whether I’m exploring nature or simply enjoying fresh air, I find it helps me stay energized and inspired in my work with young children.

Ms. Allie Pawlak

Ms. Allie Pawlak

Early Childhood Teacher | B.A. in General Studies

I graduated from Northern Illinois University with a bachelor’s degree in general studies of education. My philosophy of education is rooted in the belief that every child learns differently, and it is our responsibility as teachers to differentiate instruction in a way that meets each child’s unique learning needs. I believe that true teaching means reaching students where they are and presenting material in ways they can understand and connect with.

My passion for education began early. I come from a large family, and growing up, there were always kids running around during family gatherings, learning, playing, and laughing. One of the most influential people in my journey to becoming a teacher was my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Jebens. Her care and support, alongside that of my parents, helped ensure I received an IEP when I needed it most. Her lasting impact continues to inspire me, and we are still in touch today.

Outside of the classroom, I’m an avid fan of Starbucks cold brew and spend most of my free time with my two energetic dogs. I also enjoy drawing, painting, and researching family history through Ancestry. Staying active is important to me, so I enjoy going to the gym and spending quality time with my grandma and other family members.

Ms. Lisa VanCoillie

Ms. Lisa VanCoillie

Early Childhood Teacher | M.A. in Elementary Education

I am thrilled to be joining Fia Mia Academy in Elmhurst as a Kindergarten teacher. I hold a Master of Education degree from DePaul University and bring over 20 years of experience teaching in both private and public school settings.

Throughout my career, I have remained passionate about nurturing each child’s unique learning style. I believe in a play-based approach to early childhood education, allowing children to explore their formative years in a hands-on, joyful, and meaningful way. In this environment, children learn to communicate, express their interests, resolve conflicts, and develop a genuine love for learning.

I strongly believe that learning thrives in a classroom rooted in positivity, empathy, and encouragement. I work to create a safe space where students feel comfortable taking risks and understand that making mistakes is an essential part of growth. I lead with compassion, always aiming to meet each child where they are and make them feel seen, heard, and valued every day.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with children of diverse abilities and learning needs. These experiences have deepened my commitment to inclusive, individualized teaching and to helping every child reach their full potential.

On a more personal note, I truly cherish spending time with my kids and our dog, Emery, whether we're relaxing at home or out enjoying the day together. With my son heading off to Ole Miss and my daughter's busy dance schedule keeping us constantly on the move, life is full, but in the best way. Amid all the activity, I always make time to unwind with a good book, which helps me recharge and stay grounded.

Fostering a child’s development, academically, socially, and emotionally, is both an honor and a responsibility I take to heart. I look forward to bringing energy, warmth, and dedication to the Fia Mia Academy community.

Ms. Dana Dombkowski

Ms. Dana Dombkowski

Early Childhood Teacher | M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction

Hi! I’m Dana Dombkowski, and I am an Early Childhood Education teacher here at Fia Mia Academy. I have my master’s degree in curriculum and instruction, so I am fully equipped with the knowledge and skills to design, implement, and evaluate effective learning experiences for diverse student populations.

My philosophy in early childhood education is grounded in the belief that young children learn best through play, relationships, and meaningful hands-on experiences. I see each child as capable, curious, and full of potential, and I strive to create a classroom environment where they feel safe, seen, and supported in every aspect of their development, academic, social, and emotional.

Culturally responsive teaching is central to my approach. I make it a priority to honor each child’s background and identity by incorporating diverse materials, stories, and perspectives into our daily routines. Social-emotional learning is also woven into everything we do. I model and teach skills like empathy, cooperation, and self-regulation through daily interactions, storytelling, and intentional classroom practices. By helping children build a strong emotional foundation early on, we set them up for success both in school and beyond.

And of course, I believe that young children need to learn by doing, whether it’s through sensory play, exploring nature, or engaging in open-ended projects. When learning is joyful and hands-on, it becomes meaningful and lasting. My goal is to foster not just early academic skills, but confidence, curiosity, and a love of learning that will carry on in their educational journey.

In my free time, I love to spend time with my dog Penny, who is a two-year-old Pitbull/Staffy mix. She is truly my sidekick! You can also find me reading, spending time with my friends & family, making yummy vegan food, and bike riding. I also love traveling and exploring new places while being immersed in different cultures. Fun fact, my partner is from Scotland, so I have been learning all about the beautiful culture. These moments truly fuel my creativity and keep me grounded.

My name is Grace Lockerby, and I am overjoyed to be working with your children at Fia Mia Academy!

I grew up in Downers Grove and recently graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. During my time at Purdue, I had the incredible opportunity to student teach in seven different classrooms across eight semesters—an experience that deepened my understanding of childhood education and equipped me with a range of effective strategies to support children's growth and development. In addition to my academic preparation, I’ve gained valuable hands-on experience through years of nannying and working in daycare settings, working with children of all ages.

My educational philosophy is rooted in the belief that early childhood lays the foundation for strong emotional growth and a confident sense of self. My name is Fabiola Delgado, and I am thrilled to be part of the Fia Mia Academy community!

I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education, along with a Professional Educator's License, a Director’s Credential, an ECE Level 5 Credential, and an Infant/Toddler Level 2 Credential. I bring with me over 11 years of experience in the field, 7 years working in Chicago, and 4 years in Mexico City. My experience spans a wide range of age groups, from toddlers through elementary school, and includes time in both classroom and administrative roles.

My educational philosophy centers on creating a dynamic, engaging, and participatory learning environment. I believe in using innovative strategies that support holistic child development, encourage independent thinking, and foster meaningful learning. Every child learns in their own way and at their own pace. That’s why I implement a variety of teaching approaches that tap into multiple intelligences and emotional development, making learning fun, memorable, and deeply impactful.

Outside the classroom, I enjoy staying active and creative. I love exercising, dancing, singing karaoke, and watching movies or TV shows with my husband. I also treasure time with my family—whether we're riding bikes, exploring the zoo, trying new restaurants, going shopping, or traveling (which is one of my favorite things to do!).

I’m so excited to meet all the families at Fia Mia and to share my love for teaching with your children. I look forward to building a nurturing, inspiring classroom where every child feels seen, supported, and celebrated.

Mrs. Sarah Martise

Mrs. Sarah Martise

Associate Teacher | M.A. in Art Education

Hello, I am Sarah Martise, and I am thrilled to join the team at Fia Mia Academy. I have been working in the field of education for the past twenty years. I hold both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Art Education, and have experience teaching students PK-12. I love to watch children learn and grow, and I look forward to getting to know all of the children in my care.

My philosophy of education in early childhood is based upon following the curiosity of the child and learning through play. Children should be allowed to explore their environment and ask questions. I believed in individualized learning, making sure to take each child’s strengths and needs into account so that they can learn in whatever way works best for them. Each child is unique and should be treated as so. It is our job to help provide them with the base of their scaffold of learning so that they can continue to build upon it as they grow. Enabling children to find a love for learning will give them the desire to continue to look for more information in the world around them.

I moved with my family to Illinois from Ohio one year ago. I am still getting to know my way around the Chicagoland area. I am married, with two children, two guinea pigs, and a cat. I enjoy many forms of creating, gardening, and puzzling. I have homeschooled my children for the past 8 years, while teaching art online. My children are now taking on the adventure of entering the public school system, enabling me to go back to the classroom. I look forward to working collaboratively with my teammates and parents to reach each child’s potential.

Ms. Emily O’Leary

Ms. Emily O’Leary

Associate Teacher | B.A. in Sociology

Hello! My name is Emily O’Leary, and I am excited to be an Early Childhood Associate Teacher at Fia Mia Academy!

I attended Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, IN. I majored in Sociology, had a minor in Psychology, and graduated with my Bachelor of Arts. During college, I was involved in various groups and had many roles in them, such as yearbook editor, engagement manager for College Mentors For Kids, Historian of the volunteer fraternity Alpha Phi Omega, and was in the sorority Alpha Gamma Delta. After graduating, I took on the role of intake coordinator at Lawrence Hall on the south side of Chicago, I then moved to Colorado and worked as a site director at a before and after school program at an elementary school, eventually becoming a lead teacher in the 2-4-year-old classroom before returning to Chicago and starting at Fia Mia Academy to continue my work with children.

My goal as an early childhood educator is to make sure each of the children feels seen, valued, and loved. I believe that each child is very different in how they learn and grow, and that each of their unique personalities should shine within the classroom. I want them to be able to learn, not only educational skills, but social and emotional skills as well. This includes patience, helping one another, trying new things, and making new friends. I hope to provide a safe and caring environment for them in which to flourish.

Some fun facts about me: I am adopted from Europe and grew up in southern Illinois. I have lots and lots of siblings, so I am very used to being around a lot of chaos and different personalities. I love to read and currently have over 500 books and counting on my shelves. Some other hobbies of mine are exploring nature, cooking, coloring/painting, finding new movies, as well as traveling. I have an orange cat named Stella, and she behaves more like a dog than a cat, which I think is amazing. I am beyond excited to continue my career working with children at Fia Mia Academy!

Coach Tavey Durns

Coach Tavey Durns

Sports Camp Coach

Hi, my name is Coach Tavey, I am looking forward to working with the children and staff of Fía Mia! I was offered the position of Youth Sports Coach at the school by Michelle Layton. I met Michelle when she became a member of the strength training gym where I work. JK Strength & Fitness is a local small business in the Elmhurst Villa Park area. I work there as an Independent Contract Personal Trainer and Assistant Strength Coach. At the gym, I spend the majority of my time working with my personal clients in 1 on 1 and small-group settings. I also teach some of the group classes that the gym offers while working as one of the assistant strength coaches at York High School.

I have been in the fitness industry for a little over two years holding a previous position as a Personal Trainer at Vasa Fitness. As a former college football player and 3 sport athlete throughout high school, I have a strong passion for everything about fitness physically, mentally, and emotionally.

It is very simple for me when it came to making the decision to join Fia Mia because I get the chance to share my passion with children at such an impactful time in their lives. As society changes, we sometimes lose track of foundational things and take them for granted. Our health tends to be one of them. As exciting as it would be for me to turn each child into a weight room/fitness guru that is not what I am here for. I am very excited to coach the kids in many ways. I want to set an example of a healthy lifestyle and show them that exercise needs to be part of their lives, and that body was made to move and exercise. Next, it is a rewarding experience for myself to be able to introduce not only my passion for fitness but, share my love for sports. Very far off in the future when your kids have grown up and some of them are the next Derrick Rose, Tom Brady, Babe Ruth, and Caitlin Clark of the world I’ll be able to say I was there for some of the showings of athleticism. Even if that’s not the path for any of the kids, hopefully, they can take the habits we begin to create now of getting up and being active and carry that through their lives, which is reward enough for me!

A little bit more about myself, I completed my four-year bachelor's degree at Elmhurst University in 2021. I grew up in both the Southside and Southwest suburbs of Chicago. I come from a big family consisting of 13 siblings; I fall in the middle as child #8. I love to listen to music in my free time, am a major foodie, and I relate to infants’ love for nap time. My personality is naturally laid back while carrying an optimistic mindset. I have received 4 certifications to constantly expand my knowledge in the field of fitness. I am in pursuit of obtaining my NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Thank you for taking the time to learn a little about myself!

Señora Evelyn Orrico

Señora Evelyn Orrico

Spanish Teacher

Hola! Mi nombre es Evelyn Michelle Orrico. I was born in the beautiful Dominican Republic and embarked on an exciting journey to the United States when I was just 8 years old. Now, I am happily married to my wonderful husband, John, and we have been blessed with a fantastic son who brings joy to our lives.

Our family also includes our beloved cat, Monty, who is a remarkable 17-year-old. His playful spirit and loyal companionship have been a cherished part of our home for many years. I come from a wonderfully large family, and I am proud to have many nieces and nephews who add so much love and laughter to our gatherings.

Being around people brings me immense joy, which is why I chose a career in retail, where I could connect with others daily and create meaningful relationships. I find happiness in having fun and enjoying life to the fullest, whether it’s through swimming, dancing, traveling, or sharing my passion for the Spanish language by teaching children how to speak it.

Teaching children how to speak Spanish has been one of the most rewarding experiences. Watching their eyes light up as they grasp new words and phrases fills me with pride and excitement. I believe that language opens doors to new cultures and perspectives, and I am dedicated to helping young minds discover the joy of bilingualism. Each lesson is a new adventure, and seeing my students grow in confidence and skill is a constant source of inspiration.

Life is an adventure, and I love embracing every moment of it, surrounded by family, friends, and new experiences.
